“A LINGUAPRAGMATIC AND SOCIOLINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF UZBEK-ENGLISH CODE-SWITCHING IN YOUTH DISCOURSE”

This study investigates the intricate patterns and motivations behind Uzbek-English code-switching among youth in Uzbekistan, employing a combined linguapragmatic and sociolinguistic framework. Drawing on qualitative data from naturalistic conversations and interviews, the research identifies various types of code-switching, including inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and tag-switching. Findings reveal that code-switching serves diverse communicative functions, such as expressing identity, negotiating social relationships, filling lexical gaps, and achieving specific pragmatic effects like emphasis or humor. The analysis highlights the dynamic interplay between linguistic choices, social contexts, and individual agency in shaping contemporary youth discourse. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of language contact phenomena and the evolving linguistic landscape in multilingual societies.
