Abstract

This thesis examines the phraseological and deictic representation of space and time in English and Uzbek from a comparative linguistic perspective. The study focuses on how spatial and temporal meanings are encoded not only through separate lexical units, but also through stable phraseological expressions and context-dependent deictic markers. Although English and Uzbek belong to different structural types, both languages demonstrate a close conceptual relationship between space and time: temporal experience is frequently interpreted through spatial orientation, movement, distance, boundary, and perspective. At the same time, the two languages differ in the grammatical and pragmatic mechanisms through which these meanings are expressed. English tends to rely on prepositional constructions, adverbial particles, and fixed idiomatic patterns, whereas Uzbek makes wider use of case suffixes, postpositions, demonstratives, verbal morphology, and contextually enriched deictic forms. The findings show that space-time phraseological units and deixis are not peripheral stylistic phenomena; rather, they function as important cognitive and communicative tools that organize discourse, indicate speaker position, encode cultural evaluation, and structure human experience in language.
