Abstract

Network protocols are essential components of modern computer systems that enable communication and data exchange between interconnected devices. They provide a standardized set of rules and procedures that ensure reliable, efficient, and secure transmission of information across networks. This article examines the role of network protocols in computer systems, highlighting their key functions such as data transmission, addressing, routing, error detection, connection management, and security. It also discusses major protocols, including TCP, IP, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SMTP, DNS, and DHCP, and explains their significance in supporting internet services, cloud computing, electronic communication, and emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT). Furthermore, the article explores the impact of network protocols on network performance, interoperability, scalability, and cybersecurity. The study concludes that network protocols serve as the foundation of modern digital communication and will continue to play a critical role in the development of future networking technologies.
