PAREMIOLOGICAL LACUNARITY OF GENDER CONCEPTS IN RUSSIAN AND UZBEK: THE CASE OF KUNDOSH

The article examines the Uzbek gender-marked concept kundosh as a paremiological and translational lacuna in comparison with Russian. The term denotes a woman in relation to another wife of the same husband. In the Uzbek proverbial corpus, it functions not merely as a kinship designation but as the centre of a stable evaluative scenario involving rivalry, emotional suffering, continuous conflict and the destruction of domestic order. Russian can describe the same situation and contains isolated proverbs about several wives; however, it lacks a productive contemporary one-word equivalent with the same paremiological density. The study identifies the semantic components and principal image domains of kundosh proverbs and evaluates methods of translating them into English and Russian. Transliteration with an explanatory gloss is proposed for scholarly texts, while English co-wife is treated as a functional rather than complete cultural equivalent.
