This thesis examines the historical development of the sonnet genre in English literature from a linguistic perspective. It focuses on how the Italian sonnet form was adapted to the structural, phonological, and lexical features of the English language. The study highlights the role of early poets such as Geoffrey Chaucer, Sir Thomas Wyatt, and Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, in shaping the English sonnet. Furthermore, it explores how linguistic constraints influenced poetic innovation and how the sonnet became a reflection of language evolution. The paper concludes that the transformation of the sonnet demonstrates the close relationship between literary forms and the linguistic system of a language.
